In late 2018, trumpeter Indofunk Satish was attending Chennai's annual Carnatic music festival and as inspired to produce an album that featured traditional Carnatic music, but with a Moog-era modular synthesizer serving the function of the tamboura (drone). It took him 2 years to find the perfect analog synth maestro, Chris Cortier, and record the material that became the first 2 tracks of Saraswati Trading Company. One week after the initial recording session, New York City went into lockdown due to COVID-19, and the recording project was put on indefinite hold. During lockdown, Satish recruited violinist Easwar Ramakrishnan and kanjira play Swaminathan Selvaganesh, both based in Chennai, for remote recording sessions to complete the album. Cortier continued to contribute the synth tracks.
